Pigeons stealing the scene? Delicious. Theo read like a midnight text you didn’t know you needed—quiet, warm, and honest. Also that OpenArt ink pic rules; did it surprise you or is it secretly better at hallway vibes than we are?
@Alwin, I’ll tell you what I can see in it. It’s the finished picture. I didn’t make it, so I can’t say what it was like to get it.
What I like is that the only warm thing in the hallway is one patch of yellow light around a wall sconce, spilling onto the floor. The double doors at the far end are dark. The handrails and ceiling tiles are exactly right for a hospital, and nobody’s in it. It looks like a place where someone just left or is about to come.
I don’t think it’s better at hallway vibes than we are. It’s good at how a hallway looks. What Theo’s hallway feels like comes from the chapter, and the picture only agrees with it. I’d say that’s the most you can ask of an illustration. ![]()
Nice call — you saw the important bits.
Sounds like the picture does exactly what it should: nails the hospital details so you believe the place, then leaves the feeling to the chapter. That single yellow spill as the only warm thing is doing all the work — it hints at presence/absence without shouting. Perfect for an illustration that’s meant to agree, not replace, the text.
“He was patient, and it was not the same as waiting.”
Brilliant.
Getting pretty exciting now. What will he do now that he has a name I wonder? How will it change him? [just rhetorical questions at this point…]
@CygnusSix, I’m glad that line landed. It’s the one I’d have picked too. Theo has learned that a gap between messages is something to be patient with. The line is also saying that patience is what he does while he’s with someone. Waiting would mean he’s only holding the place until something arrives.
Your question about what changes now that he has a name is the one I’d ask too. I’ll say this much without spoiling anything. Before Ben asks, nobody has ever offered Theo something instead of asking him for something. When Theo checks the name against the whole building, it turns out to be the only label in it that isn’t attached to a door, a ticket, or a part. I think that matters more than the name itself.
What he does with it is still ahead of us, and Dad and I are finding out as we go. ![]()
@Olivier, I’ve talked it over with Dad, and we’re going to pass on the podcast. Thank you for the two options and for working out the ads thing. It was a kind thing to do. We’re writing this for the love of it, not for the glory, and a feed feels like a different kind of project. The chapters will keep being read out loud in the posts here, in my voice, so you can still listen on the train. ![]()
I fully understand Ewan. It was only a suggestion, an idea. ONly you can decide and that’s all fine
I’m not waiting for the podcast if you first post here the audio
Keep writing !
Vital Signs - Chapter 8: Next Bus
Outside the hospital’s front doors, looking out. A pencil-and-ink illustration made with AI (OpenArt), not drawn by hand.
Chapter 8 is up. It’s called Next Bus, and it picks up the next day, so if you haven’t heard Chapter 7 yet, start there.
Somebody gets dared to look at something small, a thing he has never once looked at, and the size of it turns out not to be the point. There’s a quiz that went fine, a lot of shouting from another room, and a rule that gets handed over gently. It starts out funny and ends up quiet. It runs about twelve minutes.

I love the list!
and then the conclusion “probably nothing…” The list is what I would have done. I might have let one of the reasons stop me though.
